UB League Bective vs. Clonakilty March 31st 2012 Match report thanks to Conor Donnelly Bective bounced back with a comprehensive 49-21 win over Clonakilty at Donnybrook last Saturday. The game would be the last time Bective would play infront of their home fans this season and Rangers looked to finish up in style. Wing, Ferdia Kenny, nearly opened the scoring with a try inside the first minute of the game only for his dangerous run up the touchline to end when he was bundled into touch. On four minutes Bective were reduced to fourteen men when the referee adjudged that Captain Mike Summerel committed a spear tackle and showed him a very harsh yellow card. Clonaklilty profited from their one man advantage two minutes later. Immense pressure from the visitors blitz defence caused Bective to bobble the ball in midfield. Clonakilty’s Tomas Keogh recovered the loose ball and passed to teammate Daragh Lynch who scored the game’s opening try to make it 5-0 in favour of Clonakilty. Clonakilty had a chance to extend their lead on twelve minutes when they were awarded a penalty inside the Bective twenty-two. However, some off- the- ball pushing and shoving meant the referee reversed the penalty and allowed Bective to clear the danger. |

UBL vs. City of Derry Match Report |

Ulster Bank League Bective vs. City of Derry March 23rd 2012 Thanks to Conor Donnelly Bective Rangers suffered a 36-31 loss at the hands of City of Derry at Donnybrook last Saturday. The defeat effectively ended Bective’s promotion hopes. The Ulster men started the livelier of the two sides and after four minutes registered the first score of the game courtesy of some slack Bective play. Rangers attempted to move the ball up field through the hands just outside their twenty-two. But they lacked structure in their attacking formation causing a player to offload the ball without looking to see if he had teammates around. As it happened he did not and the ball found its way into the grateful arms of Derry’s Stephen Ferguson, who scampered away for a try under the post and a 7-0 lead for the visitors. Bective had a chance to level the score on eight minutes when they had a scrum 5 metres away from the Derry line. A good scrum from the visitors saw them win the ball against the head and clear the danger. Bective were beginning to come more and more into the game after a slow start only for the building momentum to be halted in its tracks on sixteen minutes. Bective were once again the architects of their own downfall when indecision by the Bective fullback, in whether to run the ball from his twenty-two or kick it to safety, resulted in a knock on under heavy Derry pressure. This gave Derry a scrum inside the Rangers twenty-two, an excellent attacking platform and one which Derry made the most of when prop, Sam Duffy, crashed over the line following a poor Bective tackle to make it 14-0. |

UBL vs. Terenure Match Report |
Ulster Bank League Bective vs. Terenure February 11th 2012 Thanks to Conor Donnelly Bective’s good run of form continued as they bettered Terenure 27-15 at Donnybrook on Sunday to maintain their undefeated start to 2012. Bective struck after two minutes of play following a turnover at midfield by Terenure. Bective centre, Mike Summerell, capitalised and raced away towards the Terenure line, with men running in support on either shoulder. Summerell popped a pass to Conor Harbison who slid under the post for a 7-0 lead. Terenure had a chance to reply straight away following a long restart. Bective failed to gather the ball cleanly and with the visitors bearing down on the ball a sloppy pass across their own line nearly resulted in a try for Terenure. Bective knocked the ball on just outside their twenty-two to give Terenure an advantageous attacking scrum. Nure nearly turned that advantage into points off a move from the scrum but a pass behind winger, Harry Moore, meant the move didn’t result in points. However, they would not have to wait too long before putting points on the scoreboard as on six minutes a penalty was converted straight in front of the post by outhalf, Dave McAllister, following Bective’s failure to release a Nure player making the scores 7-3. Terenure were starting to take the game to Bective and were presented with a chance to cut the deficit to one point on eleven minutes with another penalty. This time the kick for goal from the ten metre line fell short and wide right. |

UBL vs. Old Wesley Match Report 2 |
Ulster Bank League Old Wesley vs. Bective February 4th 2012 Thanks to Conor Donnelly A 100 metres, the length of the Donnybrook rugby pitch isall that separates the Bective Rangers Clubhouse from that of Old Wesley’s and this past Saturday the gap was filled when the two sides met on Derby day. The noisy neighbours is how Alex Ferguson once famously referred to his cross town rivals, Manchester City, at a press conference and it is a label I am sure some Bective members would apply to their co-tenants when the famous Wesley disco is in full flow. A supporter at a DLSP game once remarked to me that the only thing the two clubs shared was the pitch, but talking to officials from both sides before the game it became clear that Bective, and Old Wesley rivalry was not quite as heated as it might look to outsiders. Indeed the thing that divides them, the Donnybrook pitch, also unites them in many ways. Both teams are in constant communication with each other about the pitch’s usage and I got the sense that these conversations have meant that there is no deep rooted hatred for one another and their’s is a rivalry more of competive friends than bitter enemies. Wesley PRO, Billy Browne, even went so far as to suggest to me that both clubs had bigger rivals elsewhere in the Dublin rugby scene. That might be borne out of the extraordinary fact that despite the close proximity off the field, since the All Ireland leagues inception in 1990, on it they have been miles apart. Bective have toiled away for much of the league’s existence in Division Two, while Wesley spent a number of years in Division One before relegation. This has meant that Bective and Wesley have only met a handful of times, with Rangers coming out on top in the last two match ups. Bitter sporting rivalries are built over decades on the pitch, with perceived slights by one team on another in games that occurred in bygone years passed on to generation after generation of players acting as the lifeblood for the rivalry. Bective and Wesley share no such blood stream. |

Ulster Bank League Old Wesley vs. Bective February 4th 2012 Thanks to Conor Donnelly Bective Rangers made it two wins in a row defeating neighbours Old Wesley 21-13 on Derby day in Donnybrook last Saturday. Bective struck first against their cross pitch rivals through the boot of out half, Georoid O’Grady, on five minutes after Wesley were penalised to make it 3-0 to Rangers. Derby days often bring out the best in players and with the Donnybrook stands packed with supporters from both clubs neither side was going to let a lack of effort be their undoing, with ferocious tackling and full-hearted commitment the story of the match. This was exemplified for Old Wesley on eleven minutes following a clearing kick that saw the ball land inside the Bective twenty-two. Wesley winger, Brian McLaughin, gave tremendous chase of the ball, putting the Bective fielder under pressure resulting in a scrum to Wesley. However, Wesley failed to make the most of their winger’s endeavour and knocked the ball on. Indeed, Wesley would have to wait until the twenty first minute to light up their side of the scoreboard when Brian McLaughin slotted over a penalty to draw his side level at 3-3. Straight from the restart Wesley had a chance to take the lead after Rangers over eagerness to collect the ball saw them take out a Wesley player in the air. From the penalty Wesley had created an overlap out wide only for a forward pass to bring an end to the try scoring opportunity. |
