The first 2011 Rugby World Cup qualifying match was kicked off by 'Irish' Trinidadian Brendan O'Farrell. A former Clongowes Wood College and Bective Rangers player, O'Farrell helped Trinidad and Tobago beat the Cayman Islands 39-12 last Sunday at the Truman Bodden Stadium in Georgetown, Grand Cayman. O'Farrell, now 38, is the most capped old Clongownian with nearly 70 caps for Trinidad and Tobago. Current Ireland internationals Gordon D'Arcy and Rob Kearney are still well behind with 37 and 6 caps respectively. Son of former Garryowen captain and Munster scrum half in the 1960s, Brian O'Farrell, and along with older brothers Kevin and Sean, Brendan has also represented the Trinidad and Tobago team - or 'Calypso Warriors' as they are known at Sevens tournaments all over the world but notably in Hong Kong and in the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. |

Congratulations to all players who played in the Metro Cup semi final last Sunday against Edenderry. It was an excellent display of free-flowing and totally committed rugby. All tries scored and the total commitment shown by all players during the game shows what a great team the Bective’s 15s is. The commitment and team spirit in the last 5 minutes was excellent and ensured the win 26 – 19 to set up a great final against Clontarf. A big thank you to the travelling supporters also who were very loud and showed great spirit from the touchline!! Assuming we can get the front pitch, we have managed to organise the final in Bective on Sunday April 27th at 11. It’s a big game and all support will be much appreciated – we have a big new stand to fill!! This Sunday we have a game against a touring team, Whitechurch, from England. If you (the parents) are in a position to make a few sandwiches or bring a few cokes or oranges it would be much appreciated. If you can provide food or drink, please let us know. KO is at 10am so try to get down for 9:30. ALL (and that means ALL) are welcome to play and we may have a few new players to help us out… The 11s are playing in 2 semi-finals after our match so support is very welcome. See you on Sunday. |
