Old Wesley 18 - Bective Rangers 14 Sunday, March 7th 2010 Having got off to a very slow start, Bective recovered well to take the lead early in the second half. And they held the lead right up to injury time - only to cough up a soft try from a 5 meter scrum and hand the game to Old Wesley. The game itself was a close affair throughout with both sides having good spells of dominance. Bective were slow to get into the match and were even slower to start tackling; and Old Wesley were no slow to take advantage making a number of good runs at the Bective line through some woeful tackling.
Old Wesley eventually made the breakthrough for a try after 15 minutes, which went un-converted. By this time, Bective had also worked themselves into scoring positions of their own and outhalf Michael Connolly was narrowly wide with two penalties. Then mid-way through the half, Bective scrum-half Brian McEvoy wrong footed the Old Wesley defence at a scrum and bolted his way to the line for a try - converted by Michael Connolly. Old Wesley re-took the lead just before half-time with a penalty kick from the Bective 22. Bective opened the second half with a brilliantly taken individual try from man-of-the match Michael Connolly. He broke through the Old Wesley defensive line after a scrum on half-way and then kicked ahead. The ball was knocked-on by the Old Wesley full back, but Connolly was on it in an instant - scooping it up on the run and powering over for the try which he converted himself. However, straight from the kick-off, Bective lost the ball at the ruck; and Old Wesley moved wide and kicked ahead yielding a try in the corner. This left the score at 13 - 14 to Bective, a lead that they defended manfully until they were unfortunately were undone in the last minute.
