Trinity vs. Bective
February 28th 2011

Match report thanks to Conor Donnelly

Bective enjoyed a 21-11 win over Trinity on the back pitch of Donnybrook last Monday night.

Both sides traded a pair of early penalty kicks to leave the score at six a piece ten minutes into the half.

On fifteen minutes more ill discipline by the visitors resulted in a scrum for Bective just inside the Trinity twenty-two. The Bective pack, which has been strength of the team on every level all season, once again displayed its power by driving back Trinity. After drawing Trinity defenders in with multiple pick and go’s Bective went wide and were reward for that decsion when a lovely turn of pace by left winger Shane Williams saw Rangers run in for the first try of the contest and a 13-6 lead.

A frantic piece of play soon followed as both teams’ exuberance in attack hurt them. Trinity were on the attack and made good ground before turning the ball over. Bective hacked the ball away and a great kick chase nearly resulted in points before Trinity gathered the ball again and launched a counter attack of their own only to once again turn the ball over and see the chance go by the wayside.

If Trinity suffered some bad luck in that passage of play they were soon rewarded with a huge piece of good fortune. Awarded a penalty inside their own half, Trinity went looking for the line. The kicker scuffed his kick however and as it came off the side of his foot the initial cries of disgust from his teammates soon turned to cheers when a Bective player failed to deal with the kick and knocked it on in front of the posts for what it seemed would be an easy three points. Perhaps still thinking about his miskick the Trinity out half sent the ball wide of the uprights and the score remained 13-6.

Bective struck soon after for their second try of the match. A chip and chase by left wing Shane Williams saw the ball roll all the way down to the Trinity twenty- two eluding the visitor’s defenders on its journey. Bective collected the ball and Aidan Mulligan received the ball after coming on a loop and ran into the corner to make it 18-6.

Trinity managed to cut the deficit just before the break. Winning a scrum in the Ranger’s twenty-two they surprisingly pushed the Bective pack back before touching down for their first try of the game. The score line was 18-11 at the break.

If the first half was a high scoring affair the second would prove to be the polar opposite. The sharpness that both teams displayed was blunted in the second half with penalties and turn over’s replacing fluid attacking moves.

That is not to say both teams didn’t have their chances. Bective out half, Jeff Power, added three more points on fifty minutes after Trinity were penalised for early engagement at the scrum to make the score 21-11.

Bective who had problems at the restart all night long failed to deal with the ensuing kick and conceded a penalty to Trinity. The visitors elected to go for the line out and pushed their way up to the Bective line but as we have seen time and time again throughout the season the Bective defence refused to break and Trinity lost the chance when they knocked the ball on.

On a cool night temperatures began to rise when Trinity, frustrated at the lack of a breakthrough, began to lose their composure. A theatrical over reaction to a challenge around the waist by a Bective defender on a Trinity player saw a mini skirmish break out. When the players had finally separated themselves the Trinity hooker decided to take matters into his hands and landed an elbow to the back of an unaware Bective player’s head. The offence went unpunished by the officials however.

With the game nearing its end and Bective secure in their advantage Trinity once again took out their frustrations on the opposition in injury time. A ruck in midfield saw a Bective player end up on the Trinity side unable to move out of the way. A Trinity player saw this as a perfect opportunity and proceeded to recklessly use his boot stamping all over the Bective player. The referee seeing the assault wisely blew for full time before things escalated as the Trinity coaching staff quickly grabbed the offending player and whisked him away to the dressing room before any retribution could be handed out to him.
