BECTIVE RANGERS MOURNS THE LOSS OF JERRY CULLETON

On Wed 4 March the club lost one of its longest-serving and valued members.  Jerry Culleton joined Bective from Railway Union in 1971, recruited by the great Joe Nolan. While at Railway, he captained the team that won the inaugural Spencer Cup and would have enjoyed the delicious irony of Bective winning the same trophy last season while on their way back to the AIL.

As a player, Jerry was on the teams that won the Minor League (3XV) in seasons 1973/74 and 1974/75. An early indication of his talent for administration was his election to the Executive Committee in 1975 when he retired from the field of play.

During his 55 years as a member of Bective, it can be said without fear of contradiction that he was foremost in serving the club and striving to ensure its progression.  Generations of members will recall him in the role of Honorary Secretary, an appointment he held with distinction from 1979 to 1996.

As well as being Secretary, Jerry was responsible for the allocation of International tickets for some 20 years along with Seán Parker, and represented the club in meetings with the Leinster Branch where they no doubt experienced his persistent and insistent approach whenever the welfare of Bective was discussed.

His long years of dedication were acknowledged with his election as Club President in 1998/99

Jerry was ever-present on match days, an enthusiastic and passionate supporter and in turn was supported by his family, particularly his wife Barbara who herself was President in 2018/19 and his daughter Aoife who also held a number of positions in support the club.

A true and loyal Ranger, Jerry will long be remembered by his many friends and colleagues in Bective.

May he rest in peace.
